3GPP==GSM/GPRS==UMTS(R99/R4/R5/R6/R7)==LTE/SAE (R8) >>>>>>
For the case of GSM/GPRS & UMTS (R99/R4/R5/R6/R7):
1. The PS Core supports only non-real time services.
2. Voice services are carried by CS core.
3. Low efficiency in forwarding data due to overly-layered networks.
4. Inability to support Multiple radio access systems.
For the case of LTE/SAE (R8):
1. There exists an all-IP network that serves data (Evolved Packet Core -EPC) & voice (IP Multimedia Subsystem -IMS).
2. The Network Architecture is Flattened & Simplified. (Access Network connects directly to Core)
3. High data transmission rates Uplink: 50Mbps, Downlink: 100Mbps.
The LTE/SAE core network is designed for high speed data services & is reconstructed as below:
1. LTE Base Stations directly connect to the EPC. (No more RNC’s or BSC’s to aggregate as before)
2. The Control Plane & User Plane of SGSN are separated as below: The Signalling function of SGSN is implemented by MME & the Forwarding function by S-GW.
3. The GGSN is now the PDN-GW.
The Evolved Packet System (EPS) Consists of 3 Parts:
1. User Equipment.
2. LTE Subsystem, This is the radio access (E-UTRAN).
3. System Architecture Evolution (SAE) that consists of the Evolved Packet Core (MME,S+PGW & HSS)
