PS Basics - GU (GPRS/UMTS) PS Core Network Elements & Interfaces.

The PS Core N/W provides  GPRS for a 2G/3G Mobile N/W. The Main Equipment are: Serving GPRS support node(SGSN),Gateway GPRS support node(GGSN),Charging gateway (CG) & Domain Name System(DNS) server.

Function of each:.
SGSN: Provide connectivity to the 3G RAN(ATM/IP) & 2G BSS(E1/IP), performs mobility management of UE & connects to HLR to realise SIM authentication of MS/UE.
DNS: Helps the SGSN select the right GGSN to serve the MS/UE. (APN resolution procedure)
GGSN: Assigns IP address to MS/UE & routes the MS/UE data traffic to Internet.
CG: Collects CDR from SGSN & GGSN & sends the CDR to billing system.
Interface Brief:
Gb: Btn SGSN to BSC in 2G.
Iu: Btn SGSN to RNC in 3G.
Gs: (CS/PS Co-location Update) Lg (Location Services), Gd(SMS over PS), Ge (SGSN CAMEL Prepaid to IN), Gc (GGSN CAMEL prepaid to IN), Gf (Check IMEI for UE) are not  so common but are SS7 & support E1 & IP.
Gr: Btn SGSN & HLR, used for SIM authentication which is mandatory, it's SS7 interface and support both E1 & IP.
Gn/Gp: Btn SGSN & GGSN. SGSN&GGSN Within PLMN called Gn, SGSN&GGSN different PLMN called Gp, the protocol stack is same.
Gi: normal IP protocol, interface between GGSN & packet data network (such as internet)
